Bologna (Italy) Image Archives of Kalpana
Welcome to Bologna Image archives of Kalpana. I live in Bologna and as you can see from the images below, Bologna provides immense possibilities
to photographers. Images are organised in groups according to themes. Under each group there are groups of thumbnails of images.

Living in Bologna
Bologna provides lot of cultural opportunities such as art exhibitions,
street music, music concerts, dance programmes, etc. You can discover
history of Bologna in its churches like San Francesco church or in the
archeological museum. A visit to Munciple collection of art to look at
Pelagio Pelagi collection is a must. There are wonderful parks like Talon
and Margherita gardens. Click on any thumbnail below to open the page

Certosa Cemetry of Bologna
Certosa cemetry in Bologna dates back to Ethruscan times to pre-Christian era. It has been the site of many archeological excavations. It is a huge cemetry,
full of monuments and statues to the dead, that changed styles in different historical periods. There are parts related to soldiers who died during first and
second world wars. Personally I like most the parts built between 17th to 19th century. In some places, the chromatic effects due to light are incredible. You can
easily spend half a day here and yet not be able to see all of it. The Jew cemetry is just outside it. Click on any thumbnail below to open the page

Bologna from the top
Here are some images of Bologna taken from the top of the Asinelli tower in the city centre. Bologna has its own twin towers - the taller tower of
Asinelli and the smaller but tilted at an angle, Gerisenda tower. Both these towers date back to 12th century, to a time when Bologna had an epidemic of tower
building in an apparent war of "mine is longer than yours" among the city nobles. Many towers were damaged during the allied bombings in the second world war and
many more were destryoed during the "reconstruction" spree that followed the war. Still, as you can see from these images, Bologna continues to have many towers. The climb
to the top is long and hard but the view is worth it. The images are from two years - 2007 and 2008 (after some snow fall). As I write it (January 2010) the entry ticket to Asinelli tower is
three Euro. Look closely and you will see that some of the houses have merged with their towers as people started making taller houses. Click on any thumbnail below to open the page

GLBT Pride Parade 2008
Bologna has one of the first Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transgender support groups of Italy and every year, the city organises the annual Gay Pride event.
In June 2008, the Italian National Gay-Lesbian_Bisexual-Transgender Pride parade came to Bologna and it was great fun. Here is a selection of images from
this event. Click on any thumbnail below to open the page with bigger images of that group of pictures.

Raves and Summer Festivals 2005-06
Bologna has a strong culture of enjoyment and defying conventions. Raves with their open sexuality with a mix of alcohol and drugs are one such occasion, though
the city is not too happy with the inevitable piles of rubblish, broken glasses and destruction of public properties that some times accompanies these raves that
bring together mainly young people. Cultural events of the summer festival find easier acceptance. Click on any thumbnail below to open the page with bigger images

Par Tot Parade
Bologna has a busy calendar of cultural events, it is also the European city of music. Among all these cultural events, my personal favourite is the annual
Par Tot parade (in the Bologna dialect claled Bolognese, Par Tot means "for everyone"). Like the different Samba schools in the carneval of Rio de Janieiro, the
different teams of Par Tot start preparing their team dances and costumes around April. Bologna university gets lot of students from other parts of Italy and from
other countries. These students are the most active participants of Par Tot but the participation is open to anyone who desires. The images below are from Par Tot
parades in 2005 and 2007. Click on any thumbnail below to open the page with bigger images of that group of pictures.

Costumes in Bologna
People in Bologna like to dress up and have fun. The images here are from 3 occasions - (1) an event called "Passamano" organised in 2006, during which
people had to make a human chain going to the top of a hill right upto San Luca, the patron church of Bologna; (2) carneval in 2007; and (3) a live christmas float
for celebrating Befana (6 January) that is the traditional Italian way of concluding Christmas celebrations.
